Refractive Errors Of Eyes

When the light rays are not properly focused into retina of the eye , a refractive error results and vision is not clear. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors.

The common refractive errors are:

It is the most common refractive error in which close objects are seen clearly, but the distant objects appear blurred. Myopia occur when the eye ball is more longer or when cornea/ lens being too curved. Head ache and eye strain are the other symptoms of myopia.

Myopia vision

Nearsightedness can be corrected with contact lenses, eye glasses , laser and other refractive surgery.

Hyperopia is common in most of the people. In farsightedness the distant objects are seen clearly but near or close objects are appear blurred. When the lens of the eyes are not curved enough which prevents incoming light from focusing directly on the retina, results hyperopia or farsightedness.

Farsightedness

Astigmatism is a common eye condition that corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses, or laser or other surgery. Head ache, eye irritation, eye strain are some symptoms of astigmatism. It is caused when the eye is not completely round.

Sometime these blood vessel swells and leak out the fluid. The retina is the thin layer that consists of light sensitive tissues. This retina focuses all the light rays and transmitted to the brain. The part of the retina called macula is help for the pinpoint vision of the eye.

The diabetic retinopathy affects both the eyes. At the early stage of diabetic retinopathy it is very difficult to identify that. But gradually it causes vision loss which is not reversible.

Causes of conjunctivitis are by allergens such as pollens, perfumes, smoke, dust etc.

baby with squint eye

It is the misalignment of one or both eyes can present at birth or develop in childhood. Treatment for the squint eye depends on the severity of the misalignment. It can correct with eye glasses or muscle surgery. When the eyes are misaligned then the straighter becomes dominant. Squint has happened when loss of  coordination between muscles.

Amblyopia

It is the condition in which the vision does not develop in one eye. That means one eye focuses much better than the other eye. Strabismus is also a cause of amblyopia .

Pediatric glaucoma

Pediatric glaucoma is an eye disease that causes childhood blindness. It is caused due to the increased intra ocular pressure in the eyes. The primary congenital glaucomas are present at birth. Treatment for pediatric glaucoma is different from the adult glaucoma treatment. The different treatment for pediatric glaucoma are : goniotomy, trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage tubes etc.

Retinopathy of Prematurity

It is occurring due to the abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in infants. The abnormal development of the blood vessel can happen when the baby born prematurely.

Refractive Errors Of Eye

Refractive errors occur due to the improper focusing of the light to the retina. There are multiple causes for refractive errors, that are the length of the eyeball, shape of the cornea or aging of the lens. Refraction means the blending of the light when it passes from one object to the other object.

When the light rays are reflected when they passes through the cornea and the lens then only the vision occurs. Then the light correctly focused on the retina in which the light rays are covert into messages and send through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain converts these messages into the real object.

Refraction of the light in eye

The common symptom of the refractive error is blurred vision. The other symptoms are :
  • Double vision
  • Haziness
  • Glare around bright lights
  • Squinting
  • Headaches
  • Eye strain

Eyeglasses :

It is the simplest way to correct the refractive errors. Appropriate lenses can correct the refractive error and give optimal vision.

Contact Lenses :

Contact lenses provide clear vision, a wider field of vision, and greater comfort. It is an effective option when it uses properly.

Refractive Surgery:

It helps to change the shape of the cornea permanently. It restores the focusing power of the eye.

Vision Through Contact Lenses

Contact lens is a thin clear lens placed on the surface of the eye. That lens makes the ability of vision. Cornea is act as the lens of the eye. The light comes from the object are first focused by the cornea. By adjusting the size of the pupil, the iris control the amount of light entered into the eye. The crystalline lens which placed behind the pupil then focuses the light. Both the cornea and the crystalline lens focused and light reaches to the retina. This converts the light into signals and transmits to brain which control sense of sight. This is the purpose happens behind the vision.

Contact Lens

Some artificial contact lenses perform the function of the cornea in the eye when cornea get damaged. They help to correct refractive errors and perform this function by adding or subtracting focusing power to the eye's cornea and lens. Contact lenses provide a safe and effective way to correct vision . Depending on eyes and lifestyle they can offer a good alternative to eyeglasses.

Contact Lenses are used to correct different problems such as :

  • Myopia : It is the condition that can see near object but is difficult to see distant object.
  • Hyperopia :The condition that can see the distant object but cannot see the nearest object.
  • Astigmatism : It is an optical defect in which vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina
  • Presbyopia : It is the blurred vision while reading books or working at the computer.

Types of Contact Lenses

1. Soft Contact Lenses

These lenses are made of soft plastic. They are more comfortable and allow the air passage through the cornea of eye. Soft contact lenses are easy to adjust.

2. Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

It provides clear vision and they are durable. So they last more than the soft contact lenses and less expensive. They are easy to handle. Initially they are not comfortable.

3. Extended Wear Contact Lenses

It can be used for the continuous use. They are made of soft plastic. So they are usually soft contact lenses.

4. Disposable Contact Lenses

Some of the soft contact lenses are disposable. When remove lenses, make sure to clean and disinfect them properly before reinserting. And should replace after the prescribed time.

contact lenses

There are different risk factors with the contact lenses while wearing. Misuse of the contact lenses lead temporary or permanent damage to cornea. If the contact lenses are used overnight , have great chance for infection of the cornea.

The people who need the vision correction can wear the contact lenses. But avoid the use of contact lenses if have the following conditions :

  • Frequent eye infections
  • Severe allergies
  • Dry eye
  • Dusty work environment

A General Review On Cataract

Cataract is an eye disease that interrupts the vision by clouding of the lens. Commonly cataract occurs in person who have aged more than fifty. Cataract is one of the causes of blindness that can be treated by a surgery. Cataract are comes under :

  • Sub capsular cataract : It occurs at the back of the lens. People with diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications have risk for a sub capsular cataract.
  • Nuclear cataract : It forms deep in the nucleus of the lens. It usually are associated with aging.
  • Cortical cataract : This type of cataract occurs in the lens cortex, which is the part of the lens that surrounds the central nucleus.

Then they are again categorized under :

  • Age-related cataracts : As the name suggests, it is develops due to aging.
  • Congenital cataracts : This type of cataract commonly found in children as a result of an infection, injury, or poor development before they were born, or they may develop during childhood.
  • Secondary cataracts : These develop as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes, or exposure to toxic substances, , ultraviolet light, or radiation.
  • Traumatic cataracts : These form after injury to the eye.

Causes of Cataract

The lens inside the eye works as a camera. That focus light into retina and makes clear vision. The lens is mostly made of water and protein. As age some protein are clump together and cloud in the area of lens. That prevents the light passage through the lens that cause loss of vision. This condition is called cataracts. As time increases cloud more and make it harder to see. The risk factors of cataract are :

  • U. V radiation from sunlight and other sources.
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Continuous use of corticosteroid medications
  • Medications used to control cholesterol
  • Previous eye injury
  • Previous eye surgery
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Significant alcohol consumption
  • High myopia
  • Family history

Symptoms of Cataracts

Usually the symptoms of cataract is starts with loss of vision.

  • Changes in the way you see color because the discolored lens acts as a filter.
  • Problems driving at night such as glare from oncoming headlights.
  • Problems with glare during the day.
  • Double vision .
  • Sudden changes in glasses prescription.

Prevention of Cataracts

No proven methods to prevent the cataract. People with history of eye problem have a greater risk of eye disease. Eat fruits and vegetables with vitamin E such as Almond, Spinach, Sun flower seed.

Cataracts Treatment

At the initial stage of vision loss it can maintain by using glasses. But in case of the severe cases cataract surgery is essential to restore the vision. In the surgery, the surgeon will remove the clouded lens and in most cases replace it with a clear, plastic intra ocular lens (IOL). Modern cataract procedures include the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device that breaks the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then gently removed from the eye with suction.

Laser Cataract Surgery

These lasers have gained approval for the following steps in cataract surgery, reducing the need for surgical blades :
  • Creating corneal incisions to allow the surgeon access to the lens
  • Removing the anterior capsule of the lens
  • Fragmenting the cataract.
  • Creating peripheral corneal incisions to reduce astigmatism.
